It’s been a while, but these ‘thoughts’ posts are some of my favorite. It’s 100 degrees in LA today, but with school back and my recent trip to Scotland I’m feeling fall’s eminent arrival.
Coffee on the road. I can assure you I’m not as much of a coffee snob as you might thing. I do prefer good coffee over bad, but I can always make do when away from home. In Italy that means one cappuccino (is there anything better than a good cappuccino?). In the UK i’m delighted to have a cup of breakfast tea. I can also just make it work with whatever I can find that’s not a Nespresso machine. Lately I’ve been brining my Aeropress (there’s a very tidy little travel version now) and coffee from home to make my own drip. It’s worth the trouble to tote this stuff around the world because I’m in love with the ritual. Making a cup of good coffee to drink from the same vessel I use at home (in this case a Kinto from my friends at the lovely Fount Coffee in NC) allows for a wonderful sense of normalcy. The ritual is worth the trouble. When we were in Gullane, Scotland at the most excellent Greywalls Hotel (where I shot these photos), I had a little coffee program running in room (#10) for my friends. They would come by and hangout while I Aeropressed a fresh cup. It was a mini-highlight of the trip for me, just to have those few social moments around a good coffee. Definitely worth the hassle.
Shoe Restoration. There are few things I enjoy as much as sending shoes back to be repaired. It feels like you are cheating the system when new life is added to a favorite pair of loafers comes back. This is one of the reasons why I buy shoes from Rancourt, Crockett & Jones, Red Wing and the like. Recently I had three pairs come back from being resoled and it’s amazing how good these things turn out.
