Italy Photo Diary
Part I: Venice
Last week we went to Italy for a J. Mueser and Fox Flannels black tie dinner. We had a few days in Venice with a bunch of friends leading into Pitti. I haven’t visited Venice in a few years so going back was a reminder of just how much I love it there. We spent some time eating, drinking and wandering around the tight passages of the city — it was an ideal way to spend the weekend. We stayed at Il Palazzo Experimental (I paid full freight; get a canal view room), which is thankfully not in the dense tourist core of the city. Being a bit removed added to the charm of our time in Venice and I enjoyed my time in this hotel. I suppose my general mediocre hotel program really pays off when I actually stay somewhere nice like Palazzo Experimental.
Being in Venice in January is underrated. It’s my favorite time to visit Europe and I even actually prefer the weather. I know it’s hard for a lot of people to travel at this time of the year with school schedules, etc., but if you can make it happen, I strongly encourage it. Everything is cheaper, more upgrades are there for the taking and the low density just makes the pace of things more manageable. In January, you might even catch the government-controlled sale timing — as if we needed another excuse to buy clothes.
I brought along two cameras (Sony A7CII with a 24-105mm lens and Leica M10R) and spent some time wandering around taking some photos. I finally feel like I have my travel camera program dialed for carry-on only adventures. The only issue was poor execution — I and forgot my Leica charger, and of course, you can’t buy one anywhere. So I only have one battery's worth of shots from the weekend to show you.
[Ed. Note: As you know, I had a bit of a tantrum about a black tie event a few summers ago in Tuscany. I’m here to admit that I was wrong, and I will have a full report on my change of thinking in a soon-to-be-published post which will include photos.]
Enjoy the photos.
